Storm Damaged Your Fence? What to Do Next in North San Antonio

Steps to take after wind or hail damages your fence: safety, photos, insurance basics, temporary fixes and how to avoid storm-chaser scams.

Strong winds, hail and falling limbs can knock down fence sections in minutes. Here’s a calm, step-by-step plan for the hours and days after a storm.

1. Safety first

  • Stay away from downed power lines. Call the utility right away if you see one.
  • Watch for nails, broken boards and sharp metal.
  • Keep pets inside or leashed until the yard is secure.

2. Document everything

Before cleaning up, take wide shots and close-ups of the damage from multiple angles, along with photos of any fallen trees or limbs. Note the date of the storm. Good records help if you file an insurance claim.

3. Check your insurance

Many homeowners policies cover fences under “other structures,” but coverage, deductibles and exclusions vary. Call your insurer or agent to ask what applies to your situation before committing to large repairs.

If a neighbor’s tree fell on your fence, or your shared fence is damaged, talk with your neighbor and your insurers about how coverage works.

4. Make temporary repairs if needed

If you need to contain pets or secure a pool area, a temporary fix such as bracing a section or temporary fencing may be reasonable. Keep receipts. Your insurer may expect reasonable steps to prevent further damage.

5. Repair vs. replace

A good contractor will tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense. Things they’ll look at:

  • Are the posts sound, or are many leaning or broken?
  • How old is the fence, and will new boards match?
  • Is the damage limited to a few sections?

Sometimes a repair is the smart move. Other times, an aging fence with many weak posts is better replaced.

6. Beware of storm chasers

After big storms, out-of-town crews sometimes go door to door. Be cautious of:

  • Pressure to sign immediately
  • Requests for large cash payments upfront
  • Offers to “handle your insurance” in ways that feel off
  • No local address, references or proof of insurance
